Monad Balkan

Monad Balkan İstanbul, Bakırköy’de 1942 yılında doğdu.
EĞİTİMİ
Klasik eğitim gördü; Galatasaray ilkokulu, TED Ankara koleji (lisesinden mezun), Ankara Hukuk Fakültesi (bir yıl), Viyana Yüksek Ticaret Okulu (Hochscule für Welthandel; iki yıl), AİTİA’dan (Ankara İktisadi ve Ticari İlimler Akademisi; şimdiki Gazi Üniversitesi İktisat Fakültesi) mezun.
Tuzla Piyade Okulu, Genel Kurmay Başkanlığı (askerlik hizmeti: bir buçuk yıl)
MEMURİYETİ:
Dış Ticaret Uzmanı olarak Ticaret Bakanlığı Dış Ticaret Dairesinde (Dış Ekonomik İlişkiler Bakanlığı, Başbakanlık Hazine ve Dış Ticaret Müsteşarlığı, Başbakanlık Dış Ticaret Müsteşarlığı olarak adları değişmiştir) çalıştı ve buradan emekli oldu.
Memuriyeti sırasında; T.C Büyükelçiliklerinde; Roma Müşavir Yardımcısı, Karaçi Ekonomi ve Ticaret Müşaviri, Sidney Ekonomi ve Ticaret Başmüşaviri, Budapeşte Ticaret Başmüşaviri olarak görev yaptı. Bu görevleri sırasında bulunduğu ülkelerin sosyal, fikir ve sanat hayatlarını yakından inceleme fırsatını buldu.
Emekliliğinden sonra Orta Anadolu İhracat Birliklerinde Denetmen olarak beş yıl çalıştı.
SANAT HAYATI:
Müzik: Dört yaşında özel piyano derslerine başladı; iki yıl İlhan Usmanbaş’tan müzik kompozisyon eğitimi aldı.
Sinema sanatıyla ilgilendi; senaryo denemeleri, kısa metraj film çalışmaları yaptı.
Şiir hep yazdı; Ursula ve Siyah Virjin adlı iki şiir kitabı yayınlandı.
Yazı: On yıl ÇAĞRI edebiyat ve fikir dergisinde felsefi konuları işlemesinin yanı sıra kendi felsefi görüşü ÖTE VAROLUŞÇULUK ‘u tanıtan yazılarıyla köşe yazarlığı yaptı.
SİYAH GAZETE , ÇAĞDAŞ HABER ‘de (internet portalı) yazdı. Halen SANATTAN YANSIMALAR (internet portalı) ve SANATIM dergisinde sanatla ilgili köşe yazarlığı yapmaktadır.
Cem Tanrıöver ile birlikte ESKi YENİ HİKAYELER adlı kitapları AMAZON’da çıkmıştır.

RESİM:
Küçük yaşta aile dostları olan devrin ileri gelen resim ustalarından (Eşref ve Melahat Ürenler, Turgut Zaim, Orhan Arel, Esat Subaşı, İsmail Altınok… gibi) feyiz aldı; nosyon sahibi oldu; pentürü özümsedi. Annesi Esma Balkan yıllık Devlet Resim ve Heykel sergilerine katılabilen figüratif ekspresyonist tarzda eserler üreten yetenekli bir ressamdı. Resim sanatının ne olduğunu bu ortam içerisinde öğrendi, anladı. Hayat boyu resim yaptı.
Yirmili yaşlarda resim ve fotoğraf sanatçılarından oluşan bir ekip içinde uzun süre çalışmalar yaptı. Leke, kompozisyon nosyonları bu devirde gelişti.
Daha sonraları, Sidney Julian Ashton Art School’da akademik eğitim aldı. 1990 yılıyla birlikte profesyonel resim sanatçısı olarak sanat camia ve ortamında yerini aldı. Bugüne dek yurtdışı da dahil olmak üzere 34 kişisel sergi açtı. Tabii birçok karma sergi, fuar, festival vs gibi etkinliklere katıldı.
Post empresyonizme yakın bir tarzda, lekeci ve pentürcü anlayışla yağlı boya ve akrilik çalışmaktadır. Resimleri varlık sorunlarını sorgulattırıcı ve gizemi zorlayıcı bir havaya kendiliğinden bürünmekte, bu da sanatçının başlıca özelliğini meydana getirmektedir. Desen çalışmaları ayrıca bir ağırlık ve önem taşımakta; sanatçı sırf desen sergilerine de yer vermektedir
Balkan, evli olup bir kız babasıdır. Çalışmalarına Ankara’daki atölyesinde devam etmektedir.

Monad Balkan was born in Istanbul, Bakırköy in turkey; in 1942.
EDUCATION: His education was a classical one starting at six years of age at Galatasaray; a famous school teaching mostly in french language in Istanbul. His next step was in capital Ankara an english language school TED Ankara College from where he received his high school diploma. He followed his way up to the university level attending a year at the faculty of law in Ankara. Then he moved to Vienna to study commerce and economics; Hochschule für Welthandel in Wien. Three years passed by and Balkan was now back in Ankara to implement his study at AITIA (Ankara Academy for Commerce and Economics); he got his BA.
The time had come for the compulsory military service finding himself in Istanbul at the infantry school followed by his service at the turkish general staff ; all in 18 months.
ASSIGNMENTS: In 1968 he initiated his long jouney in the government service. He served in the Foreign Trade section of the Trade and Commerce Ministry which through the years this section was annexed to various other ministries. Rome, Karachi, Sidney and Budapest were his diplomatic postings where he served as Chief Economic and Trade Counsellor. After being pensioned he served as auditor at the Exporters Union in Ankara for five years.
During his postings he found great opportunities to study closer the countries’ cultures especially in arts which opened a way for him to vast horizons.
LIFE in ARTS
Music: At six years of age he was to begin playing the piano with a private tutor. At nineteen his teacher was the renowned composer and pride of turkey Mr. Ilhan Usmanbaş with whom he studied two years music composition.
Cinema: He showed keen interest in the field of cinema on which he studied on his own deeply and passionately. He set up a group among his fellow friends to make short- length films. However the time and circumstances were not ripe yet to get on further.
Poetry: Starting at very young age he wrote poems a hobby which never left his soul up till this time. He published two poetry boks: ‘Ursula’ and ‘Black Virgin’.
He continues writing poems at the internet.
ESSAYS: For about ten years he wrote at the periodical ÇAĞRI as a columnist expressing his views on what he calls ‘beyond existensialism’; his philosophy. He was also a columnist at ‘Siyah Gazete, Çağdaş Haber (an internet portal). In the time being he writes on arts at www.sanattanyansimalar and at an art periodical SANATIM .
With a fellow writer Cem Tanrıöver together they published a book available at AMAZON by the title ESKİ YENİ HİKAYELER (old and new stories).

ARTS: At a very young age he met arts through his father’s new (a doctor of medicine)
Hobby; art painting. Being a renown doctor he had a great number of friends and acquaintances among them the famous artists of the time such as Eşref and his wife Melahat Üren, Turgut Zaim, Orhan Arel, Esat Subaşı, İsmail Altınok… etc. He took up the basic notion and the artistic handling of the brush from these artists; and most of all the love and enjoyment of painting.
His talented mother Esma Balkan became in this period a well known artist painting in figurative expresionist style whose paintings were being selected unanimously by the harsh members of the jury of the yearly held State Exhibition of Arts and Sculpture of turkey.
Balkan never ceased to paint throughout his life.
In his twenties Monad worked with a group of fellow friends; painters and photographers. During that time he came to learn by soul the deepest intrinsinc elements of composition.
Later in his life, he studied arts at the famous Julian Ashton Art School in Sidney, Australia which gave him an academic view followed by his entrance in the professinal life of art; a new world and a turning point in his life; 1990
Up till now he has opened 34 solo exibitions both in turkey and abroad and exhibited in many art fairs, festivals, group exhibitions etc.
His style is more of a post impressionist one with emphasis on tachist and true painturism in oils and ackrilic.
His paintings come into being in spontaneity by themselves forcing the unknown to unveil itself and question the problem of existence. That is the point featuring Monad’s own special path.
He gives special attention to the art of drawing and some of his exhibitions were composed of drawings solely. Drawing is the base of arts.
Monad Balkan is married with one daughter and lives and works and paints in his atelier in Ankara.
